Speaking in a Westminster Hall Debate on Tuesday (25th March) on the issue of Remploy, Roger Williams MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, criticised the Remploy Management for deciding to close the Remploy factories in Ystradgynlais and Brynamman
Mr Williams said:
"This will mean the end of the Remploy presence in Ystradgynlais, which for many years has employed disabled people.
"Despite a co-ordinated approach by employees, local management, local authorities, trade unions and indeed local councillors, the decision is a smack in the face for an employment force that has built up a viable product which consists of school and laboratory furniture.
"This product is now being transferred to Baglan, which is situated on the M4 corridor and is better located for attracting new industry. But Remploy are unable to meet demand and some of it is now being outsourced from Bulgaria.
"It just shows how pathetic the management are."
Speaking after the debate, Mr Williams said:
"With the workforce willing to relocate to a new site it is incredible that a Labour Government in Westminster and a Labour/Plaid coalition Government in Cardiff could not intervene to prevent these closures.
"I am pleased that 50% of the workforce have agreed to take up jobs in Baglan, but this will cause them great inconvenience and many hours of travel during the week.
"My thoughts are with the employees who have lost their job opportunities."
