Roger Williams MP, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Wales, took part in a debate on concessionary bus passes on Tuesday 25th March and called for Westminster and the Welsh Assembly to get their act together on cross border journeys.
Speaking after the debate, Roger Williams said:
"I have reports on constituents travelling from Knighton and Presteigne to Hereford on free bus passes able to get to Hereford and then find themselves unable to get back because the bus companies will not accept the Welsh version of the scheme.
"This is unacceptable.
"I have been told that everything will work properly when the schemes have settled down, but for my constituents that will be too late, so I have told the minister to get it sorted.
NOTES:
Mr Williams made the following contribution to the debate:
Mr. Roger Williams (Brecon and Radnorshire) (LD): One of the aspects that my hon. Friend has not touched on is travel between the devolved nations and England. Let me point out the difficulty that some of my constituents experienced in travelling from Knighton in my constituency to Hereford, where there is a district general hospital and major shopping centre. They were able to make the trip from Knighton to Hereford, but had to change in Kington on the way back. The bus company refused to take their concessionary fare, so they were stuck in Kington-a very fine town, I might say. The explanation is that when all this settles down it will work, but in the meantime my constituents, who expect some co-ordination, are stuck in Kington.
