Following a constructive consultation meeting in Llanwrtyd Wells about proposed post office closures, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, obtained a guarantee from the Leader of the House, Harriet Harman MP, that the modelling system used by Royal Mail to determine which outreach services are being offered to communities threatened by post office closure would be placed in the House of Commons Library and made available to MPs.
Commenting after Business Questions, Mr Williams said:
"The people of Llanwrtyd Wells clearly do not want a mobile post office service and would prefer to see a 'hosted' service in a local shop, community centre or pub, if the post office closes.
"The Post Office say that the decision on which communities will have an outreach programme and which will receive a hosted service is determined by a modelling system that takes a number of factors into account. I am concerned that this system is based on what benefits The Post Office and not what benefits local communities.
"I am please that the Leader of the House has agreed to publish this modelling system as areas affected by post office closures will be able to use it in order to see how proposed closures can be prevented.
"I look forward to the document being made available and hope that it will help to reduce local post office closures.
"I have also already made representations that in the event of Evenjobb Post Office closing that an outreach service, preferably hosted within the village, is made available. This is the only out and out rural post office that is being closed without an outreach service being provided."
