As Fair Trade Fortnight kicks off across the UK, residents of Hay-on-Wye have launched their own two week program with events from a coffee morning to a 'funky fair-trade' evening, all of which highlight the importance of fair trade.
On June 6th 2008 Wales made history and became the first ever Fair Trade nation. 'Fair Trade Wales' has now begun a two-year campaign to increase the availability of Fair Trade products in towns, cities and counties across Wales, and to encourage schools, businesses and other organisations to switch to Fair Trade.
Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnor said: "I am delighted to see people in my constituency making a real effort to support Wales' new 'Fair trade status'. Fair Trade is such an important part of our culture and the input of individual groups, like that in Hay, is vital to maintain and achieve fairness for farmers and traders both here and abroad."
"Fair Trade is such an important issue in Wales at the moment and I think it's essential that we continue our efforts to achieve total fair trade for Wales. This may well be a difficult target but if we want fairness for our farmers along with those in the developing world, we need to build upon the achievements so far.
"This wonderful two weeks of fair trade events will help to highlight the importance of Fair Trade and how it can have a positive impact around the world."
Notes:
The group in Hay was first set up in June 2008 after the Wales Fair Trade Forum (WFTF), was established to try and make Wales the first ever fair trade nation.
Kirsty attended last week's coffee morning in the Bear B&B, Hay, which sought to raise awareness about Fair trade.
