Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson, has today met with Ed Bailey, Vice President of the National Farmers Union of Wales (NFU Cymru), and Estyn Jones, Chair of NFU Cymru's Brecon and Radnor Branch, to discuss issues surrounding Electronic Identification Devices (EID) for Sheep.
Mr Williams said:
"I met with the NFU to talk about EIDs and the EU Council of Agricultural Ministers, who will meet in Brussels on 23-24 March.
"It appears that the Hungarian Minister has put the subject of EIDs on the agenda and intends to be critical about it and there is support for the British position from Germany and the Irish Republic.
"Hilary Benn has said previously that if there was more widespread opposition in the union he would be prepared to make representations on behalf of UK farmers and I understand he will now have the support of other EU member states if he were to do so.
"I will be asking for a meeting with Hilary Benn next week to relay the representations that I have received today and encourage him to join with other European nations in opposing the introduction of this costly and unnecessary scheme."
