Commenting today on the announcement by the Home Secretary that Gurkhas who served in the British Army prior to 1997 will be allowed to stay in the UK, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, has welcomed the announcement and called on the Home Office to ensure that this announcement extends to widows or former Gurkha soldiers who passed away before this decision was made.
Mr Williams said:
"This is a great day for Gurkhas who served in the British Army prior to 1997.
"It is most welcome that the Government has made this announcement and recognised the principle that if you are prepared to die for this country you should be allowed to live in this country.
Unfortunately for some Gurkha veterans this announcement will have come too late. I therefore called on the Home Secretary to extend this decision to widows.
"The Home Secretaries response was most encouraging and I hope that the Government will stick to the spirit of this announcement and not drag their feet as they have done so many before on this matter.
