The proposed conversion of off-street parking areas, currently free-of-charge, to long-stay pay & display car parks in Brecon, Talgarth, Knighton, Presteigne and Sennybridge by Powys County Council has provoked opposition from Brecon & Radnorshires Liberal Democrat AM Kirsty Williams and MP Roger Williams. They are backing local residents and County Councillors, such as Ken Harris, William Powell and Garry Banks in their opposition to the proposals.
Both politicians have previously written to the Council to register their objections to the changes to the Orchard Street and Duckhams Yard parking areas in Llanfaes, Brecon. But both will now be writing to the Board of Powys County Council to express their opposition to the whole scheme.
Commenting on the issue, Roger Williams said:
The situations are different in each town, but I view this proposal as opportunistic and potentially damaging to each community in different ways. For example, in Llanfaes, the imposition of pay & display will cause serious on-street parking congestion. The creation of the Orchard Street residents car park on the site of the former Ysgol y Bannau building was a wise move. It successfully reduced parking congestion in surrounding residential streets and on the main Orchard Street thoroughfare. Those improvements will now be reversed by these proposals.
Kirsty Williams added:
In Knighton, Presteigne and Sennybridge the principal purpose of these car parks is to serve local community centres or provide parking for local residents. In Talgarth, the imposition of parking charges will work against the major regeneration efforts that the local partnership is making there and could not come at a worse time. Powys County Council did not previously think charging for parking in any of these car parks was justified and I do not see what has changed to justify charging now.
