Bronllys County Councillor, Clair Powell, has today launched a petition to save playground equipment across Powys. Her campaign has been prompted after she received a letter from the Councils Outdoor Recreation officer stating that the play equipment in Neuadd Terrace in Bronllys had been found to be unsafe and will be removed by early February.
While recognising the need for play equipment to meet the required safety standards, Cllr. Powell expressed her extreme disappointment that current Council policy prevents the replacement of faulty play equipment after its removal.
She said:
"The swings on the play area at Neuadd Terrace have failed a RoSPA inspection and are deemed to be unsafe. The County Council should have ensured that the play equipment did not get into such a poor state in the first place. Furthermore I feel strongly that the Council should replace the faulty equipment and not just take it away. Our children need their play area."
Councillor Powell continued:
"We are all told as parents to encourage our children to take part in physical activity, yet by removing the play equipment and not replacing it the council are taking away one of the few opportunities the children in our towns and villages have to play outside."
Also joining the campaign is local MP Roger Williams. He said:
"I fully support Clair in this campaign. These play areas should be maintained properly by the Council and if equipment is found to be faulty it should be replaced. I realise this is a time of financial difficulty, but improving play opportunities for children is very important and if it cannot directly provide facilities itself, the Council should better support local councils and groups to do so.
Cllr Powell has set up a Facebook group in support of this campaign. To get involved and join the group The Council should replace our Play Equipment - not just take it away, contact her on cllr.clair.powell@powys.gov.uk
