WILLIAMS CHALLENGES MINISTER OVER INCOME TAX ALLOWANCES

March 17, 2010 12:00 AM

Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, used the final Welsh oral question session to call on the Secretary of State to do more to help Welsh workers by increasing the personal income tax allowance to £10,000.

Speaking after the question session, Roger Williams said:

"Too many people find the tax credit system over complicated and fraught with difficulty and the low level at which workers are eligible to pay income tax is, in some cases, a deterrent to finding long term employment.

"The Liberal Democrats believe that the personal income tax allowance should be set at £10,000.

"This would take 222,480 Welsh people out of the tax system all together and save 839,280 people £700 per year, which would be a massive financial boost to the neediest families in Wales in the current economic climate.

"In his response the Secretary of State chose to focus on the benefits of Tax Credits rather than the reform of the tax system that would benefit so many. While tax credits do help many families, the Liberal Democrat's proposed reform of the tax system would go much further and this response just goes to show how far Labour has strayed from representing the interests of Welsh people."

NOTES:

The Liberal Democrats propose increasing the personal income tax allowance to £10,000. This would take 222,400 people out of tax altogether and save 839,280 people £700 each year in terms of income tax repayments.
