Strategic leadership needed for local authority education departments – Aled Roberts

Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister, responds to Anglesey Estyn report:

"It is worrying that this is the second of the 22 local authorities' education departments in Wales to be placed in special measures in recent years. In the first instance in Blaenau Gwent, the Government appointed education commissioners to turn performance around. Now in Anglesey, the Government is having to appoint a Recovery Board because its own Commissioners have been in place since March 2011.

"The question that many people on Anglesey will be asking is if the county's education department's performance is so unsatisfactory, why have the Commissioners themselves not raised questions with regard to its performance? The fact that 18 months after Welsh Government intervention on the island Estyn recommends such a serious step is not good enough for the residents of Anglesey or more importantly its children.

"The Welsh Government needs to show strategic leadership to address issues of underperformance within local authority education departments. Estyn reports are showing a pattern which must concern us all and we need assurance that action will be taken with the support of local government to address apparent failings."
