Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Roger Williams MP, has today called on the Government to obtain a derogation from the EU so that they can introduce a fuel rebate for those living in rural areas, as new Welsh Liberal Democrat research shows that parts of Wales are paying more for their petrol.

Powys County Council has revealed that whilst they will not put a compulsory 20mph zone in place in Llanfaes, Brecon they will implement an advisory 20mph speed limit.

HMRC has announced proposals to vacate its Brecon offices by 2011 as part of its nationwide review of its office network. Under the review they are looking to reduce their staff by 25% and their accommodation by a third.

Local Liberal Democrat politicians have strongly criticized the failure of the newly formed Conservative Group on Powys County Council to back the council's Welsh Liberal Democrat Group proposal to change the way the council's members are selected to serve on the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

The Deputy First Minister today announced a Welsh Transport Strategy with a green veneer but no real change in policy delivery. Despite a recognition of an over-dependency on car travel, a need to reduce CO2 emissions from transport and a need to change travel behaviour the announcement did not offer any real or positive action to tackle these problems; with road building remaining at the heart of the Government's plans.

Welsh Liberal Democrats have had success in Local Council Elections; moving up from 12 to 13 seats in Brecon & Radnorshire. Five of the Six new Welsh Liberal Democrat Candidates were successful in winning their seats and become councillors for the first time.

Following a constructive consultation meeting in Llanwrtyd Wells about proposed post office closures, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, obtained a guarantee from the Leader of the House, Harriet Harman MP, that the modelling system used by Royal Mail to determine which outreach services are being offered to communities threatened by post office closure would be placed in the House of Commons Library and made available to MPs.

Roger Williams has been very disappointed with HMRC's decision to close the Brecon Tax Office by 2011 but there was a consolation that some jobs may be available in the Merthyr Office, particularly for those Brecon workers who would find it difficult to relocate to Cardiff for family and other reasons.
